Coming out of the Skills for Sacramental Marriage Building accompaniment session in March and April at Santa Rosa/Malabar and Couples for Christ and Tunpuna, St. Joseph, Curepe and Maloney parishes, online follow-up sessions continued on April 22, 29, May 6 and 13, married couples who participated shared meaningful reflections on their experience with the Emotional Release Skill (ERS), the response has been overwhelmingly affirming.
For many participants, the ERS offered something they hadn’t encountered before: a judgment-free way to express their innermost feelings. Participants described it as “a new way of thinking about how to share my emotions without any judgement”.
A recurring theme across both sessions was the value of being truly heard. Couples highlighted the importance of deep listening, not just waiting to respond, but actively creating space for their partner to be open. Participants noted that learning “the skills of listening” was among the most impactful takeaways. “This willingness to share one’s innermost self echoes God’s own invitation to His people, to come openly, without pretense, and trust that they will be received with love. In learning to offer that gift to their spouse, couples are reflecting the very heart of the God who first loved them.”
The sessions also reinforced that no one’s emotions are invalid. This principle resonated deeply, with couples expressing appreciation for an environment that validated personal and real-life experiences while building genuine trust between partners. Many noted their intention to continue the practice, not only within their marriage, but in other relationships as well.
Participants left with both the desire and the practical tools to put this skill into regular practice.
The feedback makes clear that the Emotional Release Skill is more than a technique, it is a foundation for lasting emotional connection with each other, inviting God’s grace in their relationships.
