VIRTUS reaches Central Vicariate schools

In the month of June, the Archdiocesan Family Life Commission (AFLC), in partnership with Catholic Education Board of Management (CEBM), hosted the VIRTUS: Protecting God’s Children programme for RC primary schools within the Central Vicariate, equipping educators with essential knowledge and tools to safeguard children from sexual abuse. The sessions welcomed teachers and principals from 13 schools across the region: Brasso RC, Mamoral RC, Todd’s Road RC, Caparo RC, Flanagin Town RC, Tabaquite RC, Caratal RC, Mayo RC, Gran Couva RC, Exchange RC, Chickland RC, Carapichaima RC, and Chaguanas RC.
VIRTUS is an internationally recognised programme that raises awareness and provides education on the prevention of child sexual abuse.

While the content follows international standard, AFLC facilitators Tricia Syms and Taye Coryatt, alongside representatives from the Children’s Authority of Trinidad and Tobago (CATT), ensured the material was delivered in a way that resonated with the local context.Their thoughtful facilitation helped participants grasp the seriousness of the issue while understanding how to apply this  knowledge within their school communities.

The sessions covered critical topics, including recognising signs of abuse, maintaining appropriate boundaries, understanding reporting procedures, and creating safer environments for children.
Educators engaged actively throughout the session and concluded by reflecting on their deep commitment to the holistic well-being of the children placed in their care.

The AFLC remains dedicated to extending this vital training across the Archdiocese, empowering those who care for children to be vigilant protectors. By bringing VIRTUS to the Central Vicariate, the Commission continues its mission to uphold the dignity and safety of every child as a precious gift from God. The VIRTUS Protecting God’s Children programme is mandatory for all persons who volunteer and work within the Catholic Church and is open to all parents, persons involved in family ministry, educators, catechists, organisations and all those committed to safeguarding our nation’s children.

Upcoming VIRTUS Protecting God’s Children sessions are scheduled for:

  • July 18 @ Assumption Parish Hall, Maraval
  • October 14 @ Bishop Mendes Hall, OLPH, San Fernando
  • November 14 @ St Charles Parish Hall, Tunapuna
