St. Xavier’s Hosts Puberty and Sexuality Presentation for Parents

The Archdiocesan Family Life Commission (AFLC) hosted a presentation on puberty and sexuality for parents of Prep Five students at St. Xavier’s Private School on Tuesday, October 20, 2026. The session, titled “Puberty and Sexuality: Walking With Your 11-Year-Old,” welcomed 30 parents and focused on equipping them with the knowledge and empowering them  to guide their children through this important stage of development.

The presentation explored the physical, intellectual, emotional, spiritual, social and behavioural changes associated with puberty. Parents were encouraged to recognise that every child develops differently and that young people need reassurance, understanding and appropriate supervision as they begin to seek greater independence.

Practical guidance was offered on addressing topics such as personal hygiene, menstruation, human reproduction, emotional changes, relationships, modesty and personal responsibility. Parents were also encouraged to create a safe and welcoming environment at home where children feel comfortable asking questions and receiving honest, age-appropriate answers. The session emphasised that parents have a vital role as their children’s first and most important teachers in matters of puberty and sexuality.

Feedback from parents reflected the value of the initiative. One parent described the session as informative and engaging, noting that it provided useful tools to help children better understand the physical, emotional and social changes they experience during puberty. The parent also highlighted the importance of promoting self-respect, personal hygiene, healthy boundaries and responsible decision-making.

Another participant expressed appreciation for the practical information shared, commenting that the session highlighted important signs and considerations that might otherwise have been overlooked. A further reflection raised the need for additional guidance for single parents raising children of the opposite sex, particularly in navigating conversations about puberty and sexuality.

The AFLC’s initiative forms part of its commitment forming families as missionary disciples and  supporting families as life-giving communities where every member can grow towards wholeness as a child of God.

Following this engagement, a meeting with parents of Prep Four students is planned as the next step in continuing this important conversation and preparing families to support their children as they approach adolescence.
